Photo: Bill BlyThe European Karate Union held the 31st Championship of Europe in Paris, France. Thirty-six countries entered and there were four hundred and sixty one particpants. This three day event was a non-stop action packed event that was viewed by a full house. World Karate Federation President, Jacques Delcourt of France, and his fellow country men were treated to an astonishing performance by the French Team.

Photo: Bill Bly Of the seventeen categories, France garnered 9 GOLD and more than 15 medals in total. During the medal ceremonies the French flag repeatedly was raised in tribute. The traditional flag raising and playing of the respective national anthems seemed endless.

Photo: Bill Bly The atmosphere at the competition was festive. Budo sports are very popular in France. There was a gala demonstration of Japanese Martial Arts prior to the finals. Along with the masters, children gave a very entertaining performance of karate skills.

Photo: Bill Bly Highlights from the competition included the Male and Female kata performances. France's Michele Milon gave his world class UNSU performance in the Individual and the Team events. Both Male and Female Team medals went to France. Marcela Remiasova of Slovakia earned the GOLD. She is always a top condender in kata. Many competitors performed UNSU in the finals. Most KATAs were flawless, however, those which took top honors were spectacular.

Photo: Bill Bly In the Male kumite, Damien Dovy, Biamonti, Cherdieu and Christophe Pinna brought home GOLD for France. It was a big win for Pinna who has been a top competitor for some time, but the big titles have eluded him. this year's win in the OPEN catagory gives him the recognition he deserves. Credit must be give to Britain's Wayne Otto. The current world champion in his weight class, he fought fierce competition to earn GOLD in Paris.

In the Female kumite, the coveted GOLD medals were allowed to cross borders. England, Spain, Italy and Finland, as well as France were winners.

France and England had a battle for the Male Team final. You guessed it! France was victorious. Perhaps there is something to say for home team advantage.

Last year the World Cup was held in Frankfurt, Germany and the Germans certainly had their share of success. It will be interesting to see how the South Africans do this fall in the World Championship to be held in Sun City. Being at home with the support of the crowd certainly seems to have a positive effect.

Congratulations to all of the Competitors, and the Organizers for a very exciting event.

Vive Le France!
