"The Japan Karate Association Seal"
Sensei Gene Takahashi
The JKA seal's red and white symbolize
the sun and moon. The sun as in YO - brightness. YO signifies the
offensive ready stance, or kamaete, ready to strike at any given moment. The moon
as in IN - shadow. IN stands for defensive ready stance, where the
individual stands a distance away from the opponet's reach but within his own striking
distance.
Where there is YO stance, there is IN stance. Both
must interact harmoniously. (The sun and moon represent the harmony of mankind and
the universe. It also symbolizes the development of our mind and body in Karate-do.)
The sun (red) also suggests a burning flame while the moon (white) is cool
and calm, can develop into a fierce force capable of shifting the ocean tides from
continent to continent.
