American JKA Karate Association

The World Shotokan Karate Association was formed at the JKA World Shotokan Karate Championships in Sunderland, England in 1990. Member countries of the JKA commissioned the formation of a new international association to foster cooperation between the various Shotokan organizations. The WSKA was formally established in November of 1990, with Charles Naylor as President, Ted Hedlund, Technical Chairman, and Keinosuke Enoeda as Technical Advisory Chairman.

The WSKA sponsors championships every two years. The first championship was held in Calgary, Canada in 1991, the second in Saarbrüken, Germany in 1993, the third in Sunderland, England in 1995. The 4th WSKA championship is being hosted by the American JKA Karate Association. The tournament will be held on the campus of the University of California, Riverside. The championship and related events will be held Wednesday, September 3rd through Saturday, September 6th, 1997. At least 32 countries are expected to participate in the championships.
